Nothing changes the look of a property faster or for less money than fresh mulch and a clean bed edge. A crisp spade-cut line between turf and bed gives the whole yard structure, and a proper two-to-three-inch mulch layer makes the plantings read as intentional rather than overgrown. It is the highest-return job on our list, which is why we do so many of them every March and April.

We prepare before we install. Existing weeds are pulled by hand rather than buried, the bed line is re-cut with a spade or edger to a clean vertical face, and a pre-emergent is applied so the new mulch is not immediately colonized. Mulch is then raked to an even depth and pulled back from trunks and stems — piling mulch against a tree trunk holds moisture against the bark and slowly kills the tree, and it is one of the most common mistakes we correct on new properties.

You choose the material: shredded hardwood for the darkest, most uniform look and best moisture retention; cedar for color hold and scent; dyed black, brown or red for high contrast against green turf and light-colored siding. We also install river rock and decorative gravel for beds where you want a permanent, low-maintenance surface, and we can pull and dispose of old, matted mulch that has stopped breathing.
